Annual Christmas “Carol”-ing

December 23, 2010

Mike popping in for a guest post here . . .

Every year, I meet up with my good friend and fellow Apple Distinguished Educator, Carol Anne McGuire, to record a Christmas Carol for our friends and family (check out past efforts here and here and be patient, takes a moment to buffer these audio files).

This year, we tackled the early 90’s classic Mariah Carey song “All I Want for Christmas is You“. Enjoy!

If you’re interested, you can grab our entire five-year discography here – choose the “Singing with Friends” folder to view the files by year. Click on the photo below to take you to the audio.

light saber, please

April 17, 2010

Last night I took the kids to meet up with Papa and Grandma at California Adventure. (Mike is in San Jose.) We wanted to go see the electric parade before it goes away (again) this weekend. The kids have never seen the parade, so we got there early to stake out our spot. Papa, Grandma and Jay went to ride Toy Story Mania, while Kellen and I saved our places. She enjoyed watching all the people and lights while eating cheerios and raisins.

Papa bought Jay a light up light saber. Of course, Jay was showing us (and everyone else) all his best moves. Can you see what’s coming??? Yep, that’s right. Little missy girl LOVED the light saber too. They did well taking turns with it for awhile, but finally we sent Jay over to the light saber cart to buy one for her too.

John and Cheryl were sporting their electric parade jackets.

Here’s my boy enjoying the parade. He loved waving at all the characters. Little Miss K enjoyed the parade too, just as long as the twirly bugs stayed away from us. They both fell asleep in the car ride home. By the time I unloaded the car, got both kids changed into jammies (think dead weight) it was just after 11pm. That’s when this tired mama zonked out praying that everyone would sleep in! Thanks Grandma & Papa for letting us join the fun.

i saw you in houston

April 19, 2009

last wednesday my friend sheryl invited me to her church to hear kate gosselin speak. sheryl knows of my love for the show jon & kate plus 8, so of course i went! back in january when i went to houston to visit debbie, kate was also speaking at a church nearby and debbie and i went to that event. of course for that trip, i forgot to bring my book that i got for christmas to have her sign, so i made sure i had my book with me when i went with sheryl. it was a great talk and i really enjoyed it. the venue was smaller and had a more intimate feeling than when i saw her in houston.

as we got to the front of the line, sheryl kindly offered to take a photo of me getting my book signed. unbeknownst to us i left my camera on video mode and so sheryl caught this short video of kate signing my book! kate was responding to me sharing that i had seen her in houston. too funny.

here are a few other photos from the night.
this first photo was from my vantage point. it’s blurry because i can’t hold my camera steady with no flash!
this photo was taken of the monitor that was near us.

out takes

March 8, 2009

Here are some of those “out take” moments trying to get Kellen’s monthly picture with her bear. Starting with one month old, you can see how it got more and more of a workout trying to get the cute baby girl sitting with her bear!

Yes, that’s right, I went to the Celine Dion concert with my friend (and old roommate) Eileen. Her husband had bought these tickets for Eileen last year for her birthday, but has the time grew nearer for the concert, the husband was on the fence about going. He thought maybe she’d have fun with one of her girlfriends, and I was the girlfriend!!!

Needless to say, we had fun! It was so nice to be out without the kids and catch up with my dear Eileen. Our little girls are two months apart in age, so we’ve had quite the year with all that goes into pregnancy, delivery, and newborns!

Now, on to the concert. I am the first to admit I am not the hugest Celine fan. I enjoy her music, I appreciate her talent, but I don’t own any of her albums. Eileen and I used to be roommates back in the day and she loved Celine. So needless to say, I was thankful that she thought of inviting me along. I have never been to such a “produced” concert before. Usually I go . . . wait a minute, I don’t usually go to concerts! But the ones I’ve been to in the distant past have not been nearly as “showy” as this concert! There were lights, and video, and musicians, and dancers and of course Celine! She was great and showed her amazing voice off. She even sang a few things acapella which was amazing. There were a least 6 costume changes, and the use of fans to blow at her in two numbers!  Of course for those that know me, I was especially intrigued with the sound/light board operators, anything with “back stage” things, the drums and drummer, and my favorite, the back up singers. I would LOVE to be a back up singer!!!

I was exhausted after Halloween this year. For some reason there were just sooo many things happening all on the same day. Jay wore his costume to school, I had my MOPS group (which I had to leave early), then it was back to the school for the parade, then it was the class party in the afternoon. After school I decided we better have a photo shoot in the costumes because who knew if the kids would melt down if I waited until night. Then it was off to church for the Family Fun Fest which was a lot of fun. The only down side to the church event was that at the very end Jay lost one of his Darth Vader gloves. This brought on the tears as we tried to search for it. (We will be checking lost and found on Sunday!) Then it was back home to meet Papa & Grandma to show off costumes and go trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. Whew! Are you exhausted too?

Here you can see our little Darth Vader and Princess Leia.

Mike and the kiddos at the Family Fun Fest.

Me and my little Princess Leia!!! I was so pleased that she left her “wig” on all night!

And here are the pumpkins we carved this year. Jay was old enough to use the pumpkin safe carver this year. He carved quite a bit of his own!. We left Kellen’s uncarved because we didn’t know what design she’d want! 😉 You can see how thrilled she is in the photo.

A movie, a bottle & a purse

June 6, 2008

Tonight I went to see the movie, “Sex & the City” with my dear friend, Eileen.  It was one of those last minute plans (can planning it on Wednesday and seeing the movie on Friday be considered last minute?) that I am so happy worked out. I can’t even remember the last time I went to a movie with a girlfriend. We are both nursing moms right now, so there was the planning ahead of time with the hubbys to make sure all babes would have a bottle ready. To their credit, both hubbys did great! Even with my hubby sending me a text saying “she won’t take the bottle” as I was walking to the car to head home, he was ultimately able to stay calm and get her to begrudgingly take her bottle.  Halleluyur! I so enjoyed my “date night” with Eileen! We gorged on popcorn and junior mints, and traded baby stories . . . frantically trying to get our visiting in before the movie.  The movie was great, and we both enjoyed it (inspite of the fellow in our row who kept laughing at inappropirate times and basically scoffing at the movie – THE ENTIRE TIME! also, someone in the back thought bringing their baby to the movie was a good idea and at a couple dramatic moments the baby’s cry could be heard!  Geesh!)

And lastly I was able to show off my new purse to my friend.  For those of you that know me, I rarely go shopping for myself, but with having the new baby, I desperately needed a new purse that I could fling over my shoulder with the diaper bag so both hands could be free to hold baby or carry baby carrier.  It took about two months before I found one I liked! I was hoping to get a chocolate brown purse, but black works too.  The best part was this leather purse was regularly priced at $69 and I got it on sale for $29.99!  Whoo Hoo!
