I [heart] Seal Beach

September 6, 2009

Last night we headed down to Seal Beach. It seems like every year we have this tradition of going to the beach in the evening right before school starts. Kind of a celebrations of the start of school and a way of saying goodbye to summer. The last two years we’ve gone to Balboa Island, but this year I’ve been having an itch to go to Seal Beach. I grew up in Cypress and Seal Beach was my beach growing up. I have such good memories of that beach and was even a member of the winning team of a 4-man volleyball tourney on Dolphin Ave. This must have been 1991 or 92???

Anywhoo . . . we went with the plan to walk down the pier. I had forgotten how COLD and WINDY the pier gets, so we didn’t make it all the way, but it sure was beautiful. What was new to me was the little playground! So cute with all the tiles. We even found the tile of my doctor’s family who delievered both Jay and Kellen!! (Nicest doctor in the world!)IMG_5711

Dr. Bustillo’s tile is right above Kellen’s head in this photo on the top!

Being down in Seal Beach brought back such fond memories. Even driving down Los Al Blvd. brought back lots of old youth group memories. Ahhhh, what a nice way to say good bye to summer!

end of summer

September 5, 2009

This is our last offical weekend of summer before Jay starts school on Tuesday. A few things have kept us busy these last couple of weeks.

First on my list of things to get done was creating a chore chart for Jay. I had visited my cousin Anitra and LOVED the charts she had made for her boys. So after taking pictures of hers and working on it, I have completed Jay’s chart. It hangs in the hallway. He is able to flip the picture card over after completing a chore to show the check mark. So far he seems to be doing well. We are still working on the making the bed one, but I think once school gets going we will get back into our morning routines a little better.IMG_5703

The next project I worked on was weeding out old toys from Jay’s room and packing them away for Kellen or donating them. Next summer Jay’s room is going to get a big boy makeover, but for now, I just wanted to really stream line all his stuff. We did end up moving a bookcase and his glider and he really likes it. ***Side note *** I asked Jay if he was ready to take his glider out of his room and he said, “NO! That is my love place!” This glider has been in his room since he was a baby. When Kellen was born we actually bought another glider (thanks Craig’s List) for Kellen’s room because Jay still needed his. I have told him that next summer it is coming out so that we can make room for a desk and his big boy room makeover. Too cute!!!IMG_5699

And finally, Jay got his first really bad road rash last weekend while trying out a skateboard when we were down at the Mosher’s place last weekend. There was lots of crying (I would have too if it happened to me) but overall he was really brave as we cleaned up the wound and bandaged him up. I guess I’ll hold off on those Sears portraits of the siblings at 7 years & 18 months until the cheek heals!!!IMG_5686

The stars at night, are big and bright

August 28, 2009

Earlier this month we went on a 9 day vacation to visit my sister and her family in Houston, Texas. It went by so quickly, but it was a lot of fun. Too much fun to write all about, so I’d thought I’d post some pictures that would highlight our trip.

Jay and Kellen on our plane ready to go to Texas.

Lots of time was spent swinging on the swings in Aunt Debbie’s back yard.

We all enjoyed visiting “historic mission control” at the Johnson Space Center. This is where Houston is when the astronauts talk to Houston!!

Off to visit the Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham, Texas.

Jay has decided his favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip, just like me!

IMG_5451It was cookies and cream for the Calvert girls!

Jay and Kellen’s t-shirts say, “I get cranky without my Blue Bell.” Love it!!!

Another favorite spot was the pool!!! Because, holy cow, was it hot!!!

Daddy and Kellen showing off their pool tricks. Now I know in this shot Kellen looks scared, but in reality she LOVED this and kept asking for more!

One of my favorite side trips was a visit to Galveston to see and feel the Gulf of Mexico. It was soooooo warm. And there were tons of shells to collect.

One of Jay’s favorite memories was going on bike rides with Daddy and Uncle Barry. I even tagged along one evening. Love how Jay is rockin’ the pink helmet!

Doesn’t my niece, Emma, look adorable in her pony tails!!!!!

Another favorite of Jay’s was that Uncle Barry made pancakes and eggs most mornings!!!!  Thanks Calvert’s for hosting us giving us a BIG TEXAS welcome. Yee Haw!!

what’s on your nightstand?

July 27, 2009

One of our favorite activities is reading. So I thought it would be fun to see what is on each of our nightstands.

First up, Jay. Notice the old Star Wars storybooks, a true favorite for Jay and Mike alike. It’s been fun to start reading chapter books with Jay. Danny The Campion of the World, and Babe the Gallant Pig have been recent favorites.

Kellen has recently discovered these stories. She’s even getting better at not chewing on the books.

When I was growing up I discovered this series of books that I LOVED! I can’t wait to read them with Kellen when she’s older. She keeps finding them on the book case and pulling them out. I think this is a good sign that she will love these as much as I do.

I love reading and I especially love using the library. I truely think every community deserves a beautiful library to use. That’s a whole other post . . .   Lately I haven’t been reading a lot simply do to life circumstances and working on other projects like knitting. But I do have a few books lined up to read.

When I went over to check out what Mike was reading, this is what I found. Notice the student handbook for the Ed.D. program? Yeah, that’s what we are trying to figure out right now, and there is a good possibility he will start this Fall semester. You know what that means right? This mama will need LOADS of prayers!

And of course required reading for our family is the latest OnCUE journal. Have you read it yet??? And if you want to find out more about CUE go here.

So that’s what we’re reading. What are you reading?? Hmmm?

the livin’ is easy

July 17, 2009

I love this good ‘ole summertime. We’ve been enjoying bike rides, lazy mornings, eating Golden Spoon, and renting dvds. I know this sounds silly, but some years I don’t look forward to summer, because our schedule gets disrupted and I don’t like the heat. But once we get going, I start to love our time. Jay is an awesome kid, and I just love having him home full time. Kellen is getting big, and she too enjoys her some Jay all day long.IMG_4917

Swim class was amazing, Jay has turned into a strong little swimmer and doing well with diving. This was our 4th summer of swim class at Cal State Fullerton . . . and again their program did not disappoint!IMG_5137

One of the best things about this summer was having a cleaning crew come and deep clean my house. Now, I’ve NEVER had anyone clean my house before. It just is not in the budget. We are hosting an Open House for my sister on Sunday and I just started to panic when I realized how much of a wreck my house was. Enter the cleaning crew. They worked for almost 6 hours scrubbing my little house and it is AMAZING how freeing it is to have an entirely clean house all on the same day. I worked for a few days prior to them coming to clear out the clutter and throw stuff out. I almost feel like a weight was lifted off me and now I can look around and really see my house and feel thankful for it. I even hung a few things on the wall!!

Summertime also brings the Tour de France to our home. I know, I know . . . it is so random that I would love watching this race, but I just think it is so cool. Each morning I come out and flip on the tivo to watch what’s been going on. This morning I found out one of my favorite riders, Levi Leipheimer, is out of the race because of a broken wrist. What’s funny to me, is that Mike comes along and is shocked . . .”What?? Oh no!!!” he says. I’ve got him hooked too!!!!

Another summertime treat is spending time with cousins. Jay and Kellen enjoyed hanging out with Jason and Katie yesterday. Hopefully next time we can make it to the park.IMG_5205

Oh, and Kellen has found her nose and likes to stick her finger in it! Nice!

And of course the best part is being with these two! (and Mike too!)

August 23, 2008

For Jay’s 6th Birthday yesterday, we invited a few friends and went bowling. Let me just say that seeing a bunch of kids try to bowl is hysterical! They had a blast and with all the 80’s music pumping in the place the adults were taken right back to our Jr. High & High School years! Here you can see Jay bowling with style!

Here is Jay and Kelsey, his first friend! They’ve known each other since they were babies and are only 2 months apart in age. (kelsey turned 6 in june!)

I am so proud of the person our Jay is becoming. I just wish he’d slow down this growing up business . . . just stay my little boy a little longer.

home again, home again jiggity jig

August 18, 2008

These last few weeks have been full of fun and travel! For our tenth anniversary Mike and I were able to sneak away to the Apple Farm in San Luis Obispo. What a great time we had relaxing at the inn and having a chance to enjoy one another’s company!

Then this past weekend we were invited by our dear friends the Moshers, to join them at the Welk Resort. We had a great time cooking together, laughing, settling kids down, learning iphoto on Sheryl’s new Mac Book, Play Station, Wii, water slide, Carcasonne (Mike’s new favorite game) and most importantly the Olympics! We feel so comfortable with their family, it is such a treat to vacation with them!

August 4, 2008

I was all set to post about swim class and talk about Jay’s brillance on the diving boards, but I realized I’ve ALREADY posted about that! It just goes to show I’ve been gone too long! Needless to say, we have finished 4 weeks of swim class with flying colors. I’m so proud of how much he has progressed. I can actually go to a friend’s house to “go swimming” and not go in the pool. who-wha!

As far as Kellen goes, she is finally weaned and totally on formula now. I feel really proud of myself that I was able to nurse her so long, longer than I even did with Jay! For all of you who have ever nursed, you know it’s a 24/7 job! It’s not as easy as it looks, but hey I did it! And look, now I can delegate . . . sweet!

My sister and her family came for a three week visit, with two of those weeks staying at my house. We had a great time. The kids went to VBS together and Debs and I made many runs to the Coffee Bean (they don’t have Coffee Bean stores in Texas!) The best part was at night when all the kids were down and we’d watch Jon & Kate plus 8 or Design Star or Hopkins together and swap shoulder rubs. What was really fun was going scrapbooking all day one Saturday. She’s going digital with her albums, so it was easy for her to travel with her laptop and still be able to scrap!

Here’s a photo of Uncle Barry with Kellen, they finally got to meet.

Here’s a photo with some of my dearest friends that came over for a play date to visit with Debs. There’s Holli and her girls, Kelsey & Kimberly, me with Kellen and Jay, Eileen holding Gracie, and Colin and Debs (Emma was camera shy.)

In Jay’s final session of swim class, he started learning how to dive into the water.  Check it out:

I know, it’s been entirely too long since I last posted. I’ve had tons of stuff I’ve wanted to blog about, but just no time. We’ve had my sister and niece visiting for the last three weeks. For now I will just give a quick update. The Tour de France is over and I can now go through the day without having to catch up on my bike racing! I won’t go into all the details, but again the Tour did not disappoint and I can’t wait for next year. Look for some of my favorite riders at the Olympics next month!

Soon I will be back to a more regular posting schedule. You can look forward to posts about: swim class, diving boards, visiting with my sis, weaning & knitting!
